This is going to be a very poor interview, considering I was at the show for roughly the last 20 min. But I will do my best through observations and what I heard from the young lady next to me.
Im sure Cheap Girls played well. Those guys rules. And the other band... dont know much about. So theres that part of the show.
In coming in for the last two songs, those being "Miami" from Searching for a Former Clarity and "Sink, Florida, Sink" from ...as the Eternal Cowboy, and then an encore consisting of "Rapid Decompression" from White Crosses and "Baby, im an Anarchist!" from Reinventing Axl Rose, I got a decent wirlwind tour of material. I guess I could start with what good there was. They still rock. They have a great stage presence, they burn through one song after another with no "less talk more rock". They keep constant energy. Franz Nicoli makes a good addition on extra instruments. That man gets around, from The Hold Steady (I think) and world/inferno to dresden dolls. Hes a man about town and great. Tom Gable has finally taken a roll as frontman, which is both good and bad, to be discussed later. Its good because it gives them some kind of direction on stage, it allows them to pinpoint him as a real frontman now. There was no real security as i could see, and the loft is a pretty cool place I must admit. Kinda wide open, but makes for cool stuff. I could hear what i was missing on the streets below.
The bad. WARNING! HIGHLY SUBJECTIVE!!!!!!
From what I heard, they only played two songs from Reinventing Axl Rose, and one song from ...as the Eternal Cowboy. Nothing from Crimes. This saddens be, because this is my favorite Against Me! stuff. Just proves more and more they are really moving away from the old image, and their DIY roots. This to me is bad. Also the whole Tom Gabel moving to the front thing sucks for me. 2 years ago, and when I used to see them they would all stand in a straight line in the front of the stage, with Gabel usually off to the side, taking the spotlight off himself, and showing that he was really no more important then anyone else. Now he is center stage, really embracing big label rock persona. I hung out a bit after the show and couldnt even find Franz to talk to, which kinda sucked. No real fan contact at all. Also, I find it so strange that years ago they said they wrote "Baby im an Anarchist" as a joke song and said they would never play it live, at least that often, and now that he wrote "I was a teenage anarchist" they play it again. I just see a strange sense of duality going on. Maybe he feels he needs to create some level ground for the audience, or maybe hes playing it cause he likes playing it again. Maybe im an old bitter fan who is just shit talking and over-analyzing EVERYTHING. Anyway, the ending point is, they dont really play any music I want to hear anymore, and I dont know if I will make a huge effort to see them again unless there are some extreme changes put in.
Band still rocks. Love them forever. Will hopefully (and probably) blow silversun pickups off the stage every night.
