So I guess I will preface this interview with I have been a bit spoiled without having seen awesome mewithoutYou shows, where there were tons of external musicians that came out with them and made it awesome. Aaron even made me a sandwich once when I walked on their bus. But I love this band. Lots and lots. And lots.
So the Strutt show.
I guess I could start with "Their Teeth...". I have known Glen Adam and Derek since i started booking Searchparty, and Lindy I have known for forever and ever. So in seeing what I did see of them... one thing I can say is that the new folk qwerkiness works for them. A lot. I picked up their vinyl and it sounds good. You can for sure tell that glenn isnt there. Which is good and bad, because it allows Jay to fully evolve as a front-person and they can all do things a bit differently. Also I heard they were having problems doing booking since Glen left because people think possibly they are not the same band or not together at all. Anyway, I like these guys, I have always liked what they have done to some degree, and I approve at least once. Plus im a sucker for a banjo and anything Lindy does. 'Nuff said.
Next was David Bazan. I have wanted to see Pedro the Lion/David Bazan for a long time now, so this was quite built up in my head. There were worries, I wondered if he was going to totally abandon playing any Pedro songs at all, what he was going to be like onstage, what the bantar was going to change to, anything really. To my happiness, he found a good balance between new solo music and old Pedro stuff, even acknowledging his past by opening with a Pedro song. I approve, once again. Bazan rules.
mewithoutYou. I havent seen this band in about 2 years, right before "Its all crazy..." came out. I guess in my mind the stuff they are playing now is not all that surprising. I mean there is what I see as an obvious evolution in a more folk direction from AB life to Its all Crazy. People will miss the old stuff, and I guess thats just how it goes. I can appreciate a band moving in another direction and trying new things not everyone is going to like. All this being said, the mewithoutYou I saw wasnt the same band I have seen before. There was a certain... passion? maybe missing. I dont really know. To me it felt like a greatest hits show if they could ever do one, with an obvious opening song and then an obvious, short, 1 song encore. I love this band, but before i see them again I want to know they are moving and passionate about what they are doing again. I just wasnt feeling it.
Oh yea, big ups to Nate for helping me get in after it was sold out because I skipped studying for two finals to come at the last minute, and big ups to the strutt for having some good ass IPA on tap and a rippin' pulled pork sandwich. I love sandwiches.
I really wanna hear about how they were at the pontiac show too.
Also, on another note, they are ending the last month of this tour with Murder by Death opening I assume. If anyone was at the MBD strutt show, I think they are going to smoke mewithoutYou off the stage. Just another opinion though, and we all know what opinions are like...
