Giraffe Attack - So much fun. I love these kids, they work hard, and I really appreciate that. The violin adds such a cool twist. Think Rage Against the Machine plus Flogging Molly. Can't beat that.
Taozins - So good to see Hairy Bob on stage again. This band actually sounded a lot like Bottle Fight the World, but a little more straight forward punk. I dug it. Maybe not the right crowd for them, but I think they'll tear shit up at the punk show in April with The Superbums, A Big Crash, etc.
Boherald - Best set I've seen from these guys. I commented to them that it seems like I've never seen them play the same song twice. This is very much a compliment. One of the most creative bands in Livingston County. So nice to finally get them in front of a good-sized crowd!
The Venetia Fair - My way to describe them is circus music on speed. Very theatric. Definitely like a cracked out version of Panic at the Disco, and that's not a bad thing. I guess they're kinda like Foxy Shazam too. Either way, it was a cool set. Shirtless bassist looked kind of like he escaped from a circus.
Kiss Kiss - This band SOUNDED the best of all the bands. Strong vocals, the violinist ripped, and you can just see what people have been excited about in this band. Very cool, lots of stops and starts. It was a fun set.
La Dispute - As I was explaining to Hairy Bob, this band probably sounds awful if you're standing in the back of the room. Well, not the band, but Jordan, the singer, because he rarely needs the microphone at these shows. But when 250 of your closest friends know every word to your songs, you don't really need to sing much. Another crazy good set from these guys, mixing in some songs we hadn't seen live in a while.
I got up on the mic last night, before LD's encore that I made them play, and I kind of flubbed what I wanted to say. I basically wanted to tell people that this year is absolutely marking the return of good music to the forefront. Bands will be rewarded, maybe not entirely financially, but certainly with fanfare and draw, for making good music. It doesn't have to be earth changing, it just has to be good. People are tired of being poked and prodded and forcefed crap like Brokencyde via AltPress. They want good stuff. Polar Bear Club. Alexisonfire. The Swellers. Legitimately well-written music, regardless of genre. That's what 2010's legacy is going to be, no matter how bad the Warped Tour lineup is.
